Team Philippines to the 2012 Chess Olympiad will be leaving on Sunday, 26 August at 6:50PM for Istanbul, Turkey.
The 40th Chess Olympiad is scheduled to take place in Istanbul Expo Center, Turkey from August 27 to September 10th, 2012.
The Chess Olympiad is a biennial tournament wherein national teams from all over the world represented by respective country’s chess federation competes. It is organized currently by FIDE that also selects the host country. The first Olympiad was held in 1924, in Paris, France. The last, in 2010, the 39th Olympiad was in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. The 41st Olympiad scheduled in 2014 will be in Tromso, Norway.
This would be the Philippines Men’s Team 28th participation out of 40 Olympiads. Its first participation was in 1956, the 12th Olympiad held in Moscow, Russia where the National team of Glicerio Badilles, Florencio Campomanes, Carlos Benitez and Rodolfo Tan Cardoso finished in 25th place with Cardoso winning the Silver medal in Board-4. Since then, except in 1962, the Philippines participated continuously.
The best ever result by Team Philippines in the Olympiad was a 7th place in 1988, the 28thChess Olympiad in Thessaloniki, Greece. The team was comprised then of GM Eugene Torre, IM Rico Mascariñas, IM Ruben Rodriguez, Rogelio Antonio jr, Eric Gloria and Rogelio Barcenilla.
The second best result was an 11th place in 1974, the 21st Chess Olympiad in Nice, France. The third best was 14th place in 1968, the 18th Chess Olympiad in Lugano, Switzerland.

Asia’s First Grandmaster (AFGM) Eugene Torre is all set for his 21st record appearances in the Chess Olympiad. His first appearance was in 1970 and from thereon he participated in every Olympiad except in 2008, the 38th Olympiad in Dresden, Germany.

The Women’s National Team will be on their 15th participation since 1976 Chess Olympiad (Haifa, Israel), their 1st participation. The years they had participated so far were in 1976, 1982, 1986-1988, 1992-2010 respectively. Their best results were on 1976 (16th place), 1988 (22nd place) and 2006 (26th place).
In “Despedida for the Chairman”, held on August 11, 2012, AFGM Eugene Torre when asked by BW-GETS on the Men’s Team Goal … he said “Top 20 is within reach. Top 10 is not impossible”.
GM Jayson Gonzales, NCFP Executive Director, who will accompany Team Philippines as coach and manager, had said, that both teams will be aiming to improve their respective finishes in the last 2010 Chess Olympiad where the Men’s Team placed 50thand the Women’s Team placed 44th.
NCFP Chairman & President Prospero A. Pichay Jr. as well as NCFP Board of Directors will be present on the send-off at the NAIA to boost the morale of the players.
As a parting word for the team, i share this, found in Joshua 1:9 (NKJV), “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
